Start first time every time!Simple ‘bolt on’ upgrade! |
Motivation
The standard Jabiru ignition system works acceptably at full engine RPM. Although when the starter motor is activated to start the engine, the current draw on the battery is limited and minimal spark is created in the combustion chamber. Due to the poor spark created on cranking, the pilot can be left with a dead battery and a stationary aircraft.
As magneto coils requires high cranking speeds to create suitable spark, Jabiru engines can be difficult to start when the battery is low or in cold and wet conditions.
Solution
Rotec Aerosport have been using dual electronic and magneto coils on our radial engines since the year 2000. This ignition combination is optimal as it offers the required redundancy, yet makes engine starting almost instantaneous as you don’t require a fully charged battery or high cranking speeds for the electronic ignition to generate sufficient spark. Unlike a conventional magneto coil, the slower the RPM the more powerful the spark triggered the by the electronic ignition due to the longer dwell time.
Results
- Easy starting in any condition
- Starts on poorly charged battery
- Simple ‘plug & play’ upgrade
- Old magneto can be retained as spare in glove-box
The electronic ignition is fantastic as it starts first blade every time. The engine could even be hand propped! Battery condition is no longer an issue. A poorly charged battery will still start an engine.

Jabiru Electronic Ignition Upgrade FAQ
Addition weight added to the engine?
The Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit additional weight is negligible, with the only additional item added to the installation being a coil.
How is it installed?
The E-Ignition is powered by the main 12 volt bus bar via a typical switch mounted on the panel. A breaker of 10 Amps minimum should be used.
On a typical Jabiru there are two separate ignition switches used to earth the “P” leads of the two magneto coils. In this case the magnetos are live when the contacts are open, and off when closed and the P leads are earthed.
You can use one of these switches to serve the e-ignition switch, but the switch must 12 volts positive when the contacts are closed. So the switch has to be rotated 180 degrees and the wires changed from swathing a ground to a 12 volt positive potential.
